Advice from Special Olympics Indiana athletes and caregivers
How do you decide who to trust. Here are some questions to think about:
- Who knows me best?
- Who believes in me?
- Who shows up when I need them?
- Who is good at helping me understand things?
- Who can I talk to about serious things?
- Who understands my disability and how it affects me?
- Who helps me feel better when things get hard?

Family is important.
As we grow up, we learn.
We try more things on our own. But most of us still rely on family for some things at every age.
When we trust and know each other well, it feels good to get advice from each other.
When you want advice, you may try this THINK PLAN DO worksheet.
It is from California Developmental Disabilities.
Family has a role in our lives.
These roles may change as we become adults.
Some family members have one role. Others have many roles.
You may live with your family as an adult. You may live with friends or roommates.
Your family may still support you wherever you are. Good families talk honestly. They share quality time and support each other.
Family Search has a family tree worksheet to list the people in your family. You can print this out and fill it in. You can write names, draw pictures or paste photos onto the tree.
How does your family help?
Families may look different.
You may be close to some and not others in your family.
Who helps you? Your parents, siblings, other family, trusted friends or support staff?
