Families for support, trust and care

Family are the people who know us the best.  They are often the people that we trust and love most.

  • We all start out as children in a family.
  • Our family helps us grow.
  • They help with all our needs when we are young.
  • They give us the chance to learn new things.
  • They feel proud with us as we learn new things.
  • They protect us when we need their help.

Advice from Special Olympics Indiana athletes and caregivers

How do you decide who to trust. Here are some questions to think about:

  • Who knows me best?
  • Who believes in me?
  • Who shows up when I need them?
  • Who is good at helping me understand things?
  • Who can I talk to about serious things?
  • Who understands my disability and how it affects me?
  • Who helps me feel better when things get hard?

Families need support too.

All families have joys. But all families have stresses.

Family members may need services to help them support each other in times of stress. We call these Family Supports.

Family members may sometimes need to take a break. We call this Respite. Respite helps families stay ready to do all they want for each other.

Sometimes it is hard for the family of a person with a disability to reach out and get support. Remind your caregivers to take a break and get support services.

Family supports should:

  • Make life better for all family members.
  • Support the needs of caregivers. These include emotional, physical and financial needs.
  • Help families steer in systems of care.
  • Teach families about choices for community support.
  • Give good pay and benefits to paid caregivers.
  • Support siblings as they plan for now and the future as allies and caregivers.
  • Check up on how caregiver needs change with aging.
